Integration, Agglomeration, and Costly Adjustment of Labor

چکیده
How large are the welfare e¤ects of EU enlargement and to what extent are skilled workers a¤ected di¤erently than unskilled workers in each region? In this paper, imperfect labor mobility is modeled within an economic geography framework to examine the welfare implications of goods and factor market integration. While unskilled workers are immobile, forward-looking skilled workers have the option to relocate, which involves an adjustment cost with a common and an idiosyncratic component. Consequently, steady-state properties depend on the distribution of these costs. Furthermore, trade liberalization does not necessarily harm the periphery. Integration, specialization, and adjustment
The paper considers the location of two industries in two countries. Both industries are imperfectly competitive, producing goods for final consumption and use as intermediates. Intermediate usage creates cost and demand linkages between firms, encouraging industrial agglomeration. With high trade barriers each industry operates in both locations in order to supply final consumers. At lower tra...
متن کاملFactor Mobility, Economic Integration and the Location of Industry
This paper examines the importance of factor mobility within countries for the manifestation of agglomeration and location effects emphasized in the new economic geography literature. Working with a model of trade under monopolistic competition, the relationship of factor mobility (in particular labor) to industry adjustment and relocation is developed analytically, and then illustrated with a ...
متن کاملThe Short and Long Run Causality between Agglomeration and Productivity
This study is to investigate the short- and long-run causal relationship between agglomeration (localization and urbanization) economies and labor productivity in the manufacturing sector of 28 Iranian provinces over an 11-year period, 2001–2011. Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) method was used to estimate our long-run panel data model. The empirical findings suggested that localiz...

Despite the low participation rate of women in the labor market, the unemployment rate of women has increased significantly and has exceeded the unemployment rate of men in the last three decades. This paper focuses on the factors which affect labor demand considering gender using the data for the period 1986-2017. Based on the Multiple-Equation Generalized Method of Moments estimator, the resu...
متن کاملAgricultural Sector and Industrial Agglomeration∗
In many developing countries, agriculture hires at least as many workers as manufacturing industries. We investigate an economic geography model in which agricultural goods are costly to transport and in which manufactures hire labor from the local agricultural sector as unskilled labor. Our conclusions show that the parameters in the agricultural sector are crucial to determine the spatial con...
